Children's Fun

The Royal Highland Show returns to the Royal Highland Centre in June packed with entertaining and educational activities for younger visitors to see and do.

With over 4000 animals in action, whether its pony club games, sheep sheering competitions, show jumping it is one of the few opportunities to see so many animals up close.

The honey tent gives a glimpse of the fascinating and busy world of bees.  There are opportunities to find out what it’s like to be a beekeeper, learn where honey comes from (and to taste some!), or to try and find the queen bee. You can even make a beeswax candle to take home.

To explore a more general overview of Scottish wildlife, including information about the re-introduction of the beaver to Scotland, children can check out the stand for the Scottish Wildlife Trust.  Scotland’s leading wildlife charity runs various activities, including how to make your own bird feeder to help wildlife thrive in gardens at home.

When it comes to some hands-on, floury fun, look no further than the Gorgie City Farm stand in the Children’s Discovery Centre.  At this “O Floury Scotland” attraction,  children learn the simple skills of the quern (hand mill) - used to grind corn into flour, which can then be taken home.  It’s great for making your own play dough!

The Army are back at the show again this year with an array of things to see and do.  From tanks and trades to cavalry, wall-climbing to mine-clearing and a remote controlled machine that finds and destroys bombs. Firm favourite are the inflatable assault course and Royal Marine speedboat simulator.  For the brave of stomach, there’s a  chance to try what army rations taste like

As always there are lots of foodie delights to discover:

The Morrisons Cookery Theatre’s “Gimme 5” activity investigates healthy eating and looks at a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables and meat.  There is also the chance to chance to create a salad, dessert, stir-fry or delicious porridge.

Another essential stop-off for the young, budding chef is Focus on Food’s Cooking Bus for Scotland.  For the first time in Scotland, this mobile, state of the art cooking classroom will be on display with children having the chance to get hand’s on in the kitchen.

For more exciting activities in action, the forestry area is one place not to miss. World champion cyclists Ben Savage and Duncan Shaw will once again be showing their skills in BMXTrial riding on a specially designed course with natural and man made obstacles.
