Showjumping at the Royal Highland ShowShowjumping at the Royal Highland Show has increasingly become one of the ‘hotspots’ on the calendar for the leading exponents of the sport in the UK. In 2008, this has been recognised by the award of a Renault Jump class (for Grade ‘A’ Horses) , one of a series for which the venues are handpicked by the British Show Jumping Association who keep a close eye on the progress of all riders who compete – the highest placed horse/rider combination on the league table after the final event will be awarded a car to keep from Renault UK Ltd so there is keen rivalry, particularly when a first prize of £2,500 is at stake on 20th June!  There is a broad range of classes on offer across the four days, for both horses and ponies.  Some of the horses are just beginning to show promise at the Foxhunter and Grade C level – others are highly experienced talented animals which can jump the bigger, trickier courses.  The courses are designed by top course builders Jon Doney, Mark McGowan and Kelvin Bywater who have plied their trade at the highest levels all over the world, as well as being involved with the popular TV series Only Fools on Horses. In one class in particular, on Friday at 3.15 in the Main Ring, the winner of the Andrew Black Grade A Championship  class will get the chance to jump again to “Double their Money” – Matt Millin the commentator is sure to have the crowd on their feet cheering on the winner to see if they can take home a large cheque for £2,000. Saturday sees the best horses and riders competing for a £15,000 prize pot in the prestigious Grand Prix class which gets centre stage billing in the main ring at half past three. On Sunday the junior showjumpers will amaze people with their professionalism and ability, steering their ponies over courses of substantially built  jumps with seeming ease.  These kids will be at the top of their sport in just a handful of years, following on in the footsteps of the “Young Masters” of which some two dozen or so competitors will tussle it out to be crowned Young Master Champion for 2008 and to take up the mantle from Douglas Duffin, the 2007 winner.
